Method and Apparatus for Air Treatment (Patent No: 679451)

Inventor: Electronic Specialty Co.

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Comments: N/A

Description:

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. An apparatus for the treatment of air and comprising an enclosure having an air inlet, air outlet spaced from the inlet, an aqueous bath in the enclosure, a filter of flexible, porous, cellular foam sheet material in the enclosure, said filter having substantial thickness so that its pores have substantial dimension in the direction of the thickness of the sheet and hence upon flexure of the filter, the walls of said pores of the flexed portion are changed in shape during continuance of the flexure and upon discontinuance of the flexure, become restored to their original shape, power operated means for continuously driving the filter along a closed path and causing the filter, along one portion of the path, to pass into and emerge from the bath so as to be wetted thereby, and along a second portion of the path, to pass between the air inlet and outlet, means operative to apply force to the filter to flex the filter temporarily along said one portion of its path after it has entered the bath so that the pores are in said changed shape during passage of the filter part way through the bath, and then to release the filter from the flexing force before it leaves the bath and prior to its passage along said second portion of the path, thereby wash the dirt particles out of the pores, said pores providing a multiplicity of passages extending directly through the belt from one face to the other face and said passages being open at both faces and of a size affording a direct flow of air through the belt.

2. The apparatus of Claim 1 wherein the filter is a thick endless belt, a horizontal roll is mounted in the enclosure above the level of the bath and within, and extending transversely of, the belt, and supports the belt at one end, the means for flexing the filter comprises a lower roll within, and extending transversely of the belt and at least partially submerged in the bath, and said lower roll being sufficiently submerged, and of such diameter and weight relative to the thickness of the belt, as to apply and release said force.

3. The apparatus of Claim 2 wherein the ratio of the thickness of the belt to the diameter of the lower roll is about 5 to 16.
