1. A backwater valve comprising, a valve housing having an inlet connection and an outlet connection for flow of liquid through said valve, a valve flap, a seat for the valve flap, a pivot arm having a first pivot connection to the valve housing and a second pivot connection to the valve flap, the first and second pivot connections being .arranged so that the valve flap is seated against said seat during backflow and is unseated during forward flow, a shaft having at least two telescopic sections, a spring urging said telescopic sections apart, said shaft extending through the valve housing and movable into the housing to apply resilient pressure to the pivot arm to hold the valve flap against its seat, and means for locking said shaft to the valve housing when said shaft is applying resilient pressure to the valve flap.
2. A backwater valve as defined in claim 1 in which the part of the shaft extending out of the valve housing when said shaft is withdrawn is hinged and adapted to fold to a position substantially at right angles to the normal direction of the shaft.
