Thomas Cushing Buckingham, Halkirk, Alberta, Canada. 10th August, 1915; 6 years. Filed 29th September, 1914. Receipt No. 243,549.

Claim.—l. In a crate, the combination with a body having the usual bottom, sides and ends, of a transverse partition dividing the said body into compartments, a pair of fixed members extending longitudinally on top of said compartments at each side thereof and partially closing same, a pair of movable members disposed between the said fixed members and completely closing said compartments, said movable members being adapted to be moved longitudinally simultaneously to permit access to one compartment at a time, transverse members secured to the said movable members and engaging slidably under the said fixed members and having their ends abutting the sides of the crate so as to prevent lateral movement of the said movable members, said transverse members being so positioned as to engage the said partition and an end of the crate when a compartment is opened, and a wedge-shaped member carried by each movable member, said wedge-shaped members being oppositely disposed to each other so as to engage the said partition on opposite sides thereof and prevent longitudinal movement of the movable members when in the closed position.

2. In a crate, the combination with a body having the usual bottom, sides and ends, of a transverse partition dividing the said body into compartments, a pair of fixed members extending longitudinally on top of said compartments and partially closing same, a longitudinally movable frame disposed between the said fixed members and closing the said compartments entirely when central, said frame having transverse members engaging slidably under the said fixed members and against the sides of the crate, said transverse members being so positioned as to engage the said partition and an end of the crate when a compartment is opened, stop members on the frame adapted to engage the said partition so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the frame when in the closed position, and to be raised to clear the partition by the springing upwardly of the frame when opening or closing a compartment, and stop members on the frame adapted to engage the ends of the crate when the frame is in the closing position.

3. In a crate, the combination with the crate body, of a cover slidably connected to the crate body whereby either one end or other of the crate top may be opened while the opposite end remains closed, and a locking device for the cover adapted to be automatically locked by the inward slidable movement of the cover and released by the outward slidable movement of the cover, as and for the purpose specified.

4. In a crate, the combination with a crate body having the usual bottom, sides and ends, of a stationary stop member secured to the crate intermediate of its length, a movable cover member provided with cross members designed to alternately engage with the stationary stop member and the crate ends, and a longitudinal guide portion carried by the crate body with which the cover member slidably engages, as and for the purpose specified.
