Railway Car Axle (Patent No: 181437)

Inventor: Richardson, Ula F.

Location: Carstairs

Comments: N/A

Description: No. 181,437. Railway Car Axle.

Ula F. Richardson. Carstairs, Alberta, Canada. 1st January, 1918; 6 years. Filed 31st January, 1917. Receipt No. 275,065.

Claim.—1. An axle of the type described formed of two sections one of which is solid while the other is hollow and arranged in telescopic relation with the solid sections, means carried, by each section, a flange formed on the outer tree end of the hollow section, a sectional collar, means for removably holding the sections of the collar on the inner face of the wheel on the solid shaft so that the collar will engage the flange to prevent longitudinal movement of the sections but at the same time allow one wheel to rotate independently of the other, and journals formed integrally with the wheels.

2. An axle of the type described formed of two sections one of which is solid while the other is hollow and arranged in telescopic relation with the solid section, means carried by each section, a flange formed on the outer tree end of the hollow section, a collar composed of two semi-circular sections, each section including a securing portion and a flange portion offset from the securing portion, means for removably holding the securing portions on the inner face of the wheel on the solid section so that the flange portions of the collar will be positioned about the flange on the hollow section to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the sections but at the same time allow independent rotary movement of the wheels.

3. An axle formed of two separable sections, one of said sections comprising a hollow axle sleeve, wheel and journal formed as a unitary structure, said sleeve being provided with a flange at its free end, the other of said sections comprising a solid axle, wheel and journal formed as a unitary structure, said sleeve being adapted to receive the solid axle, and a removable sectional collar having a flange forming a shoulder to co-operate and engage with the flange on the sleeve and the wheel on the said solid axle, said collar and the several flanges serving to limit the relative telescopic movement while permitting rotary movement of the two sections.
