Claim.—1. The combination with an exhaust nozzle, of a casting superimposed in the nozzle and provided with guides, plates slidably engaging with the guides and provided with recesses at their adjacent edges forming an orifice, bell cranks co-acting with the plates, and a fluid actuated piston operatively connected to the bell cranks designed to automatically actuate the plates and vary the effective area of the orifice formed by the plates.

2. The combination with an exhaust nozzle, of a casting superimposed above the same, bell cranks on the casting, plates slidably mounted above the casting and connected to the bell cranks, a spindle, crank and link mechanism connecting the spindle to the bell cranks, a fluid actuated piston, and means intermediate of the piston and spindle operatively connecting the same.

3. The combination with an exhaust nozzle, of a casting superimposed thereabove plates slidably mounted on the casting having recesses in their adjacent edges, packing means intermediate of the plates on the casting, bell cranks carried by the casting operatively connected to the plates, a spindle, crank and link mechanism connecting the spindle to the bell cranks, a crank lever on the spindle, a fluid actuated piston and a rod connecting the piston and lever.
