Comments: see Along the Burnt Lake Trail; biographical information; organized telephone system west of Sylvan Lake; invented beet thinning machine manufactured at Corpus Cristi, Texas; chain gate had system of levers and ropes designed to allow one to drive up to it, pull a rope, drive over collapsed gate, close it by pulling a second rope while driving slowly; manufactured in Red Deer in the mid 1920s

Description: John Surdan Fitch and James Francis Tobin, co-inventors, both of Evarts, Alberta, Canada, 15th June, 1926. Filed 8th June, 1925. Serial No. 303,438.

Claim.—l. A device of the character described comprising gate posts, guide ways fixedly mounted on the posts, a pivotally mounted lever arm between the posts, link members connected to the lever arm, gate-carrying means pivotally mounted on said lever arm, a lock member mounted on the posts and flexible means connected to said link members whereby the Jock member is engaged and the pivotally mounted lever member is operated.

2. A device of the character described comprising in combination a collapsible gate, double and single posts for said gate, guide ways mounted on said double posts, a lever pivotally mounted between said double posts, link members pivotally connected to said lever, a gate-carrying member pivotally mounted on said lever comprising an inverted U-shaped member, a shaft, a roller, adapted to engage the guide ways, a pivotally mounted locking member and lock-engaging means carried by the link members.

3. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the locking member comprises a shaft, a gate-opening member and hook members.
