Oscillating Skate Sharpener (Patent No: 874727)

Inventor: Emerson, Stanley V.

Location: Edmonton

Comments: N/A

Description: The embodiment of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. A tool for skate sharpening and the like, comprising a motor driven grind stone with its base keyed to a supporting base plate; a main frame, flanged for wall or other mounting, with an attached pivot spindle which supports the motor grind stone unit, through its supporting base plate, in a plane perpendicular to the plane containing the main frame; a motor and gear assembly rigidly attached to the main frame and providing oscillating motion to the motor grind stone unit by driving its supporting base plate, through an adjustable eccentric, an oscillating arm and a pivot, the oscillating motion being a repeating arc described about the main pivot spindle by the motor grind stone unit and its supporting base plate, in a plane at 90 degrees to the plane of the stone and to the plane containing the main frame; a skate holder consisting of an adjustable clamp for holding skates, and the like, attached to hinged arms which are, in turn, attached to the main frame through an adjusting pivot to allow centering the skate blade longitudinally on the centre of the are of the, oscillating grind stone, the hinged arms allowing manually controlled movement of the skate blade longitudinally over the grind stone surface as the grind stone is oscillating in a plane at 90 degrees to the plane of the skate blade and the plane of the stone.

2. A tool as defined in claim 1 in which the motor grind stone unit has a bolt assembly and adjusting nut provided to allow controlled, manually adjustable, movement of the motor grind stone unit along, and in the plane of, its supporting base plate in a direction parallel to the centre plane of the grind stone, thereby allowing the working surface of the grind stone to be set in various positions ahead of, on, or behind, the centre of the pivot spindle, which in turn allows a skate blade, and the like, to be sharpened to any desired finish varying from sharply to slightly concave, through straight edge and from slightly to sharply convex.

3. A tool as defined in claim 1 in which the grind stone is a standard width grinding stone which, by virtue of the described oscillating motion, has each part of its surface in contact with the skate blade an equal length of time, allowing the stone to wear evenly and not require frequent dressing to maintain the desired radius on its surface.

4. A tool as defined in claim 1 and claim 5 in which the pivot spindle has an adjustable dressing tool mounted thereon to allow dressing the grind stone to any desired radius on the same arc on which it oscillates.
