Emergency Clock Movement and Winder Mechanism (Patent No: 447771)

Inventor: Phillipson, Edward G.

Location: Medicine Hat

Comments: N/A

Description: Edward G. Phillipson, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Application January 5, 1945, Serial No. 522,018
3 Claims

Claim.—1. A clock comprising the combination with an electrically operated clock movement of a non-electrically operated clock movement, said electrically operated clock movement being connected to said non-electrically operated movement by a pair of intermeshing pinions, one of which is secured for rotation to one of the hand-shafts of said electrically operated movement for rotation therewith, the other being mounted upon one of the hand-shafts of said non-electrically operated movement, a clutch assembly co-axially mounted upon the hand-shaft of said non-electrically operated movement upon which said last-mentioned pinion, is mounted, key-means upon said last-mentioned pinion engageable with key-ways in the hand-shaft upon which it is mounted, said key-means being out-of-engagement with said key-ways when said electrically operated movement is functioning, and clutch assembly actuating means for moving said clutch into contact with said key-means to move the same into engagement with said key-ways thus securing said last mentioned pinion rotatably to the hand-shaft on which it is mounted.

2. The combination as denned in claim 1 wherein said clutch assembly includes a slidable bushing having an internal wall of convex cylindrical configuration and a pair of diametrically disposed projecting studs upon the outer wall thereof.

3. In combination with a spring operated auxiliary clock movement for The purpose herewithin set forth, an electrically operated winding mechanism consisting of a freely mounted pinion upon the mainspring shaft of said movement. said pinion being rotated by a source of power, a band ratchet secured to said pinion, a plate ratchet keyed for longitudinal movement upon said shaft, being engageable and disengageable with said band ratchet, a screw-threaded portion upon said shaft upon the plate ratchet side thereof, a non-retatable traveler co-axial with said shaft and engageable with said screw-threaded portion to move in a plane parallel with the axis of said shaft, intercepting portions upon said traveler engageable with said plare ratchet to move the same into and out of contact with said band ratchet, and means for preventing rotation of said traveler.
