RCMP Veteran Wally Wallace was born in Regina and grew up in Moose Jaw. He joined the RCMP when it was recruiting men to go overseas during World War II. He served in #1 Provost Company and spent his service time in Alberta, arriving in the province in 1940. Wally was stationed throughout the province, including Calgary and Edmonton. Upon retirement he settled in Calgary. Wally's main hobby is Fort Calgary and he has played a vital role in its development. In January 1972, he was appointed as a representative of the RCMP Veterans on the Fort Calgary Restoration Committee. In August 1975, he helped organize the Dedication Ceremony for Fort Calgary Historic Park. From 1978 to 1980, he served as a board member of The Fort Calgary Preservation Society. In 1978 he joined the Preservation Society Collections and Exhibitions Committee. As a volunteer Wally has assisted wtih the cataloguing and storage of Fort Calgary's collection. He has even produced a summary of Fort Calgary Historic Park. Wally believes that volunteering at Fort Calgary is part of his service as an RCMP Veteran. As an active member of the Calgary Veterans' Association, Wally has served as its president and secretary.

Volunteer's Name: Sylvia Jones
About this volunteer:
In 2002 Sylvia Jones received a Lifetime Award for 10 years of volunteer service at Fort Calgary. Sylvia was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in New Jersey. She attended the New Jersey College for Women (Rutgers), the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and the Scarrett College in Nashville. After graduating Sylvia went to Uruguay where she worked as a missionary and teacher. Here she met her future husband, Gordon, a British geologist. After getting married in Bloomfield, New Jersey, Sylvia and Gordon moved to Wales where he finished his doctorate. Then they returned to Uruguay where their first 2 children were born. They moved to Calgary in 1959. Sylvia wanted to learn about Canadian history so she became a volunteer at Fort Calgary. As a school program docent, Sylvia enjoys working with children, the challenge of inspiring them and seeing their reaction to what they see and hear during their visit. In addition to volunteering at Fort Calgary, Sylvia has devoted 25 years to being the organist at Rosedale United Church and other churches. She and her husband enjoy traveling and spending time with their 12 grandchildren.

Volunteer's Name: Jack Crossley
About this volunteer:
Fort Calgary recognized volunteer Jack Crossley with a Lifetime Award in 2002. Born and raised in Calgary, Jack worked for 43 years at Standen's Ltd. His first volunteer job at Fort Calgary was reorganizing the library and his present assignment is that of Artifact Storage Technician. He is also a special events volunteer. Jack has a personal connection to the exhibits in Fort Calgary's Interpretive Cente as his family owned the Parkview Shoe Shop, which is reconstructed on the Street of Dreams. Jack helped to make the reconstruction possible by donating many family objects to the display. In addition, he has donated numerous artifacts to the Fort Calgary Collection. Jack has a talent for model building and has created the 1875 Fort model and the 1914 Barracks model on display in the reconstructed 1888 Barracks Building. As a Fort Calgary volunteer, Jack enjoys meeting and talking to visitors, listening to their point of view and helping others. In September 2001, Jack received the Museum's Alberta Individual Award of Merit for his contribution to Fort Calgary and Alberta's Museum Community.

Volunteer's Name: Raymond Sales
About this volunteer:
Raymond Sales was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and started his RCMP training there in 1952. He worked in Ottawa and then spent 24 years in Alberta, stationed at Red Deer, Innisfail, Stettler, Wetaskiwin, Peace River, Stoney Plain, Lethbridge and Calgary. Raymond retired from the force in 1978 after 26 years of service. Following this retirement, he worked for the Alberta Government Justice Department and served as Vice Chariman of the Driver Control Board until 1991. After 1991, Raymond continued to work part-time for the Alberta Government in the Crown Prosecutor's Office. The enjoyment he experienced during his career in the RCMP motivated Raymond to become a volunteer veteran at Fort Calgary. He is pleased to represent the Calgary Veterans' Association as their Volunteer Coordinator at the historic site. Raymond has also contributed volunteer service to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and is an active member of the Masonic Lodge. His other interests include camping and golfing. Fort Calgary had the honour of recognizing Raymond Sales for his volunteer service with a Lifetime Award in 2001.

Volunteer's Name: Ray Wilson

Ray Wilson comes from a family of nine and was raised on a farm near Roblin, Manitoba. In 1956 Ray joined The RCMP Force as it offered "stability, a good job and a pension". After training in Regina, Ray was stationed in Richmond, B.C. for 7 1/2 years, followed by 3 years in Vancouver. From 1967 to 1970 he worked in Victoria as one of the original members of the Commercial Crime Section. Then in 1970 he was transferred to Ottawa to the Securities Fraud Information Centre. In 1973 he was sent to work in Winnipeg. Ray retired from the Force in 1978 after 22 years of service, including 19 in criminal investigations. The same year he moved to Calgary and joined the Calgary Veterans' Association. Over the years he has held all positions with the local division. Ray has served as a member of Fort Calgary's Board of Directors and has been the General Manager of its fundraising casinos for approximatley 20 years. In 2001 he received a Lifetime Award for his contributions to Fort Calgary. Ray also volunteers with the Douglasdale Community Association. His hobbies include curling, woodworking, doing home renovations and photography.
