Organization Name: Fort Calgary

Organization Mission Statement: To create a place where people and history intersect to rebuild Fort Calgary as the centre of Calgary.

Organization Focus: Fort Calgary is the site where the city of Calgary was born in 1875 when the North West Mounted Police built its post at the junction of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Our present day site consists of: a reconstruction "in progress" of the 1875 original North West Mounted Police Post; a reconstruction of the 1888 Barracks; The Interpretive Centre housing interactive exhibits that tell the history of Calgary from the 1870s to the 1940s; the Deane House; and the Hunt House. Our vision is "Sharing our History, Building our Community". We focus on providing high quality visitor experiences which in turn generate the revenue needed to maintain financial sustainability. Our volunteers, 233 in 2004, contribute to the visitor experience by providing guided tours, leading school programs, participating in special events, facilitating visitor interaction with exhibits and maintaining historic gardens. They volunteer behind the scenes by cataloguing artifacts, sewing historic costumes and performing office tasks. With their support we are able to fulfill our organizational goals including creating 'a sense of place/home' for all Calgarians.
