Organization Name: Hull Child and Family Services

Volunteer's Name: William Roper Hull

About this volunteer:
- Pioneer, Entrepreneur, Community Minded Citizen and Philanthropist In 1873, William Roper Hull, with his brother John, left England and sailed for North America. In 1883, William visited Calgary after driving a herd of cattle (the largest horse drive in history, about 1,200 head) through the Crowsnest Pass. William purchased property in Alberta which was to become the famous ¡§25 ¡§Ranch at Nanton and he became the largest single rancher in the west. In 1925, Hull passed away, leaving the bulk of his estate to care for needy children William Roper Hull contributed to the Alberta community in many ways: „X He helped form the Stock Growers Association „X He was one of the five original founders of the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company „X He erected many buildings in the province ¡V the first cultural building ¡V Hull¡¦s Opera House, the grain exchange building and the Alberta Block „X He was a charter member of the ¡§ Pack of Western Wolves¡¨ ; forerunner of the Ranchman¡¦s Club „X He was involved with many youth oriented agencies such as Scouts and the Navy League. „X Hull¡¦s summer home is now known as the Ranche Restaurant, and the location of his home is now known as Hull Estates. „X He had a vision for creating a healthy community. ¡§I see homes, schools, shops and churches with everything one needs for a happy life and I will help build it¡¨. „X He generously gifted to many agencies, including what is now known as Hull Child and Family Services, which is dedicated to providing support to youth and families. There remains a William Roper Hull Memorial Park, honouring the man and his legacy.
