Organization Name: Volunteer Edmonton

Volunteer's Name: Christine Dober

About this volunteer:
What motivates Christine to volunteer with Arts Start is the desire to be involved in a new project and to help all kids have the opportunity to take music, dance, and art classes. She is amazed by the variety of interesting work they do. She has helped them practice songs for fundraisers, and participates with them in their dance classes.

She recognizes the importance of the educational experience that the kids gain by attending events such as Symphony for Kids at the Winspear. Not only do they have a chance to hear beautiful music, but they also learn about how music is made and about the many instruments that make up a symphony. She notes the positive impact that Arts Start has had on the kids – they take pride in their work, are less self-conscious, and have improved their ability to focus.

For Christine, the change she sees in the children as a result of their involvement in Arts Start is all the motivation she needs to continue her devoted volunteer work.

Organization Name: Volunteer Edmonton

Volunteer's Name: Doris French

About this volunteer:
Doris French, another volunteer at Sifton School, helps with everything that needs doing, including lamination, photocopying, bulletin boards, displays, counting and rolling money, helping students with school work, helping teachers in and out of classrooms, helping students with tests, book fairs, library shelving and signing out of books, hot lunches, distributing lunches, fundraising, field trip supervision, making letters, putting newsletters together once a month, and the Food for Thought program.

Doris states, “Volunteering to me is very important. I think it makes a difference, when you are able to volunteer in the classroom or the school. I do believe your child achieves better and my children enjoy that they know I am there helping out. When you know what is going on in the school or classrooms is better for both yourself and much better for your children. I enjoy it and have a lot of fun doing it.” She also finds it satisfying to give the school a helping hand.

Organization Name: Volunteer Edmonton

Volunteer's Name: Doris Jacobi

About this volunteer:
Doris Jacobi has been an active member of the Good Samaritan Society Ladies’ Auxiliary since 1958. This wonderful active group of ladies exists to provide an avenue of funding to purchase enhancements for our residents’ quality of life, such as towel warmers for our Tub Room project, menu boards, birthday party celebrations, various sewing projects, an electric piano for one unit, and a comfort chair for palliative care.

During this time, she has occupied an auxiliary executive position on many occasions, steering the group’s involvement in projects. The Annual Spring Tea courtesy of the Auxiliary brings the community and residents together for a fun-filled day. Doris also assists in Sunday Morning Worship for our residents — she’s there with a smile, a hug, and gentle encouragement to assist however she can. Doris is just the difference an organization such as this one needs — an extra set of hands and the warm heart that reaches so many of its residents, families, and staff.

Doris says, “I am a life member of the Good Samaritan Society, and the best thing I can do is to volunteer, which I have done for many years. I receive many blessings in return … volunteering has been a beautiful jewel in my memory bank.”
