Inventive Spirit
At the most basic level, successful inventions make our day-to-day activities easier
and more economical. On a grander scale, inventions move the seemingly
impossible into the realm of the possible. The intellectual and creative
journey undertaken to find answers to functional problems and practical
questions encompasses the human inventive spirit.
It takes a visionary to not only see the potential
inherent in a specific idea, but also to transform it into an invention
or, eventually, an innovation. Inventors are risk-takers and critical
thinkers who share a curiosity about the human condition. The same
artistic impulse that inspires painters and poets, drives many inventors
to move beyond the pursuit of new knowledge to construct useful tools that
improve our quality of life. Other inventors, like Calgary's Wally Cartwright,
the man responsible for the charming "Mall-ette" game, invent to fulfill a
personal need for creative expression.
This section addresses the complex issues Alberta
inventors face during various development phases, including the initial
generation and refinement of ideas, challenges and obstacles, research and development, ethical concerns, the detailed patent application process,
and the policies and research establishments that aid in the transfer of
technology and knowledge.
