There
were many political factors in Italy and Canada that led to successive influxes
and droughts of Italian emigration. Political issues also influenced the
attitude toward and the treatment of these Italian immigrants.
Few Italians came to Canada before WWI; Italian immigration was virtually non-existent between the two wars
due to the rise of fascism in Italy, and to Italy's invasion of Ethiopia;
however, there was a huge influx after WWII especially in
1950s and 1960s.
