As the community prospered, people moved away from the inner city and there are fewer and fewer of these gardens visible.  The gardening continues in suburban locations now a part of a national trend fostered by television and magazines fostering cocooning.  A display of traditional crafts of the Calabria Region of Italy is presented at the Italian pavilion during Edmonton's Heritage Days, 2002. Photo courtesy of the Heritage Community Foundation.Within Alberta's Italian communities, the elders who came in the early 1950s and 1960s are now nearly all gone and the challenge is to preserve these traditions in ways that are relevant for today.  Italian language programs are entrenched in both Edmonton and Calgary but the challenge of retaining cultural traditions remains.  One couple interviewed indicated that it was their children who insisted that the mothers learn to make the Italian Christmas baked goods once their grandmother died.

Perhaps the discovery of regional Italian cookery by North American chefs will help to preserve those food traditions in North America's immigrant communities.  But community members who watch these performances, remain purists at heart.  The old ways, preferably learned at the knees of grandmother or mother, are the best.
