History

This section provides a brief history of Estonia, including social and political conditions during the 19th and 20th centuries that influenced emigration. The section is divided chronologically, allowing for an in-depth look at Estonian immigration to Alberta and an analysis of social developments decade by decade.

The farm house at Albu Estate, Estonia, (near Paide) where Jakob Erdman lived as a child. This photo was taken in 1927 and sent to Jakob in Barons by relatives. Oxen were often used for plowing fields and for clearing land. This picture was taken on Saaremaa, Estonia in 1895. Teams of 8 horses were used to plow the prairie soils at Barons, Alberta. The Gwen Kerbes family haying with two teams of horses in the area of Stettler, Alberta in 1930.
