Happy New Year!

We want to wish everyone in the University of Saskatchewan campus community a heartfelt Happy New Year – and welcome back to your teaching, administration, or support service work that will continue to make the U of S an effective institution of higher education through the year 2000.

As reported on Page 1, it appears the campus – like the rest of Canada and the world – weathered the Y2K transition with little problem, though we may have minor computer glitches that will need attention through the early weeks and months of the year.

We at On Campus News look forward to continuing to provide timely news and information of value to our more than 4,800 readers throughout the year.

Part of that function is providing people with a forum for expressing their views on the issues of the day at the University.

During the first three months of this 1999-2000 year we had very little opinion offered for publication, but that all changed when we ran a viewpoint (Nov. 26) from former On Campus News editor Wayne Eyre. We’ve had a number of responses to that viewpoint, all of which we run on Pages 4-6 of this issue, along with a further response from Eyre.

We welcome and encourage such debate on issues of importance to all of us at the U of S – and we invite all readers to consider expressing their opinions on current topics, either as a "Letter to the Editor" of up to about 400 words, or as a "Viewpoint" of up to about 800 words.

Have a great 2000!
