ME AS A MAN INTERVIEWING MYSELF AS A WOMAN

I IMAGINE MYSELF A MAN INTERVIEWING MYSELF AS A WOMAN

QUESTION FROM ME AS A MAN:The formal aspects of your work Ms Montano are extremely archetectonic. Could you elaborate on my statement?
LINDA M MONTANO: Are you referring to the fact that I use numbers in my work?
Q:Not only that. Mainly I'm interested in the fact that there seems to be a foundational structure that is hidden from the audience's gaze but does hold together your somewhat flippant and often farcical content. The work might be uninteresting if it weren't for the grid supporting it.
LMM: So few people see this fact so I am glad for your insight. Yes I have an Apollonian/Dionysian receipe going on in most pieces. I'm not courageous enough to play without structure and framing.
Q:That seems art history influenced, am I right?
LMM:For sure. Remeber how art historians would analyze and dissect paintings compositionally? I make sure I have that same complexity and intelligence going on in my performances.
Q: Would you please address something that worries me. Performance in the 70's was initiation-driven. Artists wanted to change their consciousness, reach spiritual heights, re-enact shamanic rituals, be sacred spacemakers. Now what is happening in performance?
LMM: Are you implying that now performance is money driven, fame driven and basically impure? Very few of us continue doing "performance art" these days. But the images we played with are being used by Reality TV Shows and they have borrowed and imitated the images of 70's performances but there is one difference...INTENTIONALITY. Reality TV is the dark side of 70's performance art and an abandonment of the sacred.
Q:Have you any idea why this might be?
LMM:This generation of creative kids is rebelling against the seriousness of the 70's. But I fear that something might result from their need for fame and need for money. They don't realize that when they play with big energies like endurance and difficulty and public exposure of their courage, they will unleash the giant of power. We at least in the 70's knew that after we did risk-taking work, we had to find Guru's and teachers to guide us through our power surges. Will these kids do the same?
Q:Ms. Montano, you have a 84 page single spaced resume, thousands of references on the google search, a wonderfull website, www.lindamontano.org ,so whatever I ask now might seem redundant because so many people know about you. No more questions, just my congratulations on a wonderfull and fruitfull career. Mazeltov is not genius enough to wish you!
LMM: Thanks. This has been a stimulating and creative meeting of minds.
