Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian’s first photographer and custodian of photography. He and his studio staff were responsible for collecting and duplicating images brought back by scientists and researchers traveling on business in other cities throughout the world, many of which often described the structures of other museums, documentation of Smithsonian-sponsored expeditions, and images of scientific phenomena.
