Installing the Oil-Tank Cover

transfer case oil tank, Yamaha Road Star

If you removed the oil-tank cover from the transfer case, do the following:

  • Bolt the oil baffle into oil-tank cover (3 bolts), if it was moved. Torque to 7.2 ft-lbs, which is 86.4 ft-lbs.
  • Clean and dry the oil tank's small rectangular screen.
  • Insert the rectangular screen into the transfer case. Be sure you orient its bulge out and toward the tank's center.
  • Install alignment dowels and a new gasket for the oil-tank cover.
  • Take picts.
  • Bolt and torque the oil-tank cover. Use 7.2 ft-lbs.
  • Stuff a rubber glove or a clean, lint free rag 1/2 way into the oil fill hole to keep dirt out.
