Sorry, that work thing got in the way. That was my thinking, if fuel ran to the pump it will run to the carb.

It's a conundrum. A very inconsistent one.
Starship(?) went pumpless on his a month or so back, and experimented quite a bit, and posted here pretty regularly about his changes. He started with doing nothing at all other then just ditching the pump. He had some issues with it starving for fuel at the 1/4 tank mark(the conundrum). He went to 3/8 fuel line, and then skipped the inline filter, and I think he has vented the cap now also. Somewhere in there, he was doing just fine, and regularly running right down to the reserve mark around 4.1 gallons to fill. Several of us wondered if he may have had a bathtub ring(varnish etc.) around the screen on the main feed tube of the petcock. I don't think he has changed out the needle and seat for the Grizzly model, or changed the float level yet, but I can't remember exactly.

When the tube on the petcock is nothing more then a floor drain the fuel runs into, why it doesn't run in the hole, but tries to remain in the tank like a miniature version of Moses parting the Red Sea, is beyond me.

I am having a hard time understanding why you would have to cut the intake screen off. How can that have any effect on how much fuel can pass through it? Not being difficult, just trying to make sense of it.
Dewayne

I left the screen in place on the main tube and cut it at the bottom then reset it. My curiousity is why shortening it helps. Initially I thought it was for cornering to the right and keeping fuel available.

There seems to be some confusion about the two screens involved here.

One is located on the petcock inlet tube and is not to be discarded, just lowered if desired. Again, it's not necessary to cut it down. It's done so that the low fuel light will come on just before you need to switch to reserve from main instead of the other way around. I don't want to go into a long winded 'why it's different that with a pump' story, it just is.

The second is located just inside the carb where the fuel line meets the carb. That is the screen that is removed. It serves no purpose (especially if you are using an in-line filter) and may slow down the intake of fuel under high demand. I'm not saying that's definate, just, why have it there when it's not needed and may increase the chance of fuel starvation under demand?

I have a quick question on this matter. I'm convinced I have a fuel starvation problem with mine. What part numbers are needed for the Pingel Petcock and adapter? This would be the only thing I haven't done yet.

Im changing my air filter to a K&N RC-1980 this week I checked every thing from vacuum leaks to new spark plugs I have a HI flown fuel filter I cut down the pick up tube last year every this was good till this season. Every now and then it would sputter at 70 or so. But more so now. I've gone over every thing 5 to 6 times. runs great then just some time it starts to sputter on the HWY. I switch to res and it runs fine. this is with a full tank. SO I'm guessing its a flow problem. This is why Im looking for the part number for the correct Pingel petcock and adapter. Gona try this next.

Have you tried venting the gas cap?

It should not be necessary but the p/n is 4211-CH62C. I just installed one, but I just like the way they look and I had a slight seepage from the stock petcock. If you decide to go with it let me know there are a couple things that are vague in the directions.

If it runs fine when you switch to reserve, then it's not starvation.

I'm with Sk on this, have you vented the tank in any way? Vented cap or removed the rollover valve in the vent line?
